Clinica Oftalmologica del Caribe and Fundacion Oftalmologica del Caribe were established in 1985 by Luis Escaf, MD, with the mission of developing one the main and first specialty hospital for the treatment of eye and visual diseases. For more than 30 years, both institutions have been working as a whole, the preservation of vision.

Since the beginning the ophthalmology department was developed through subspecialty services to promote the excellence in eye care. Among our team, we have world renowned eye clinicians and surgeons making our institution the main referral center in the Caribbean and one of the most important comprehensive ophthalmology centers in Latin America.

Our institutions have made great contributions not only to the well-being of vision in the population, but also to research and academics. Our residency program initiated about two decades ago in collaboration with the most prestigious local and national universities, has trained the next generations of clinicians and surgeons. We have trained over 80 international fellows from different parts of the Americas and Europe.

Our commitments with the mission of preserving sights cannot end with our work in academics and clinical care. About a decade ago, the Colombian Institute for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology was created with the sole purpose of increasing our research output. The fact of being the main and only ophthalmology center in the region makes us the ideal place for performing remarkable clinicals trials and new development for the future of ophthalmology.
